From Plucking Strings to Duquesne University: Parents, teacher play instrumental role during student's journey
Department of Defense Education Activity Americas
March 2, 2025 | 2:58
Every March, DoDEA celebrates Music in Our Schools Month to emphasize the crucial role of music in student success. This celebration is perfectly illustrated by Michael's inspiring journey from a curious young guitarist in California to a high school drum major and scholarship recipient.
Michael's parents recognized his interest in the acoustic guitar early on and supported his musical endeavors. His passion for music deepened when his family moved to Camp Lejeune, where he met Tim Tyson, a seasoned music teacher with over forty years of experience. Under Tyson's mentorship, Michael's musical abilities thrived.
Michael is set to attend Duquesne University next year, aiming to become a music teacher. He has earned both academic and music scholarships, which he credits to his dedication and the unwavering support of his parents and music teacher.
DoDEA operates as a field activity of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. It is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and managing pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade educational programs for the Department of Defense. DoDEA operates 161 accredited schools in 9 districts in 11 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA Americas operates 50 accredited schools across two districts, located on 16 military installations, including Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard bases in seven states, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Committed to excellence in education, DoDEA fosters well-rounded, lifelong learners, equipping them to succeed in a dynamic world.
