Was World War I Good for Medicine? ‘From 1914’s Grim Reality to Today’s Virtual Reality’, B-Roll Part 1
Natochannel
June 24, 2014 | 2:44
B-roll footage includes various shots of the Belgium city of Ypres, the Belgium in Flanders Field Museum, the race reconstruction pictures hosted in the "In Flanders Fields" Museum, and the British Military Cemetery in Ypres.
This video looks at how medical advances that began 100 years ago are still used today, by both military and civilian hospitals. It asks medical, military and history experts whether dealing with today’s combat injuries– such as IED strikes and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – were influenced by treatment of injuries such as shellshock 100 years ago. It also highlights how technology is now on the frontline of medical treatment but asks: is today’s problem that there aren’t enough medical personnel to operate the technology?
As the 100th anniversary of World War I approaches, NATO Review magazine asks: if any good came out of the carnage of the ‘Great War’, was it advances in medicine?
