Team Dover will host a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Dover Air Force Base Main Gate.

The night's festivities are open for Team Dover and the local community who have a Department of Defense identification card, and for their family members and guests.

There will be hot chocolate and cheerful Christmas carols such as 'Jingle Bell Dash' and 'The Polar Express Medley' performed by the Maj. George S. Welch Elementary School choir.

"We love performing for the Dover Air Force Base Tree Lighting Ceremony," said Diane Walls, Music Teacher and Chorus Director at Welch Elementary School. "Many of our students who have parents serving in the Air Force feel a very strong connection with the base and all its special events."

More than 60 students will perform carols during the ceremony, said Mrs. Walls.

"The students really enjoy the hot chocolate and cookies that are provided for them, and they think that the highlight of the evening is when Santa arrives on the fire truck," said Mrs. Walls. "It's a terrific way for families to start celebrating the holidays together."

In addition to the traditional elements of the tree lighting celebration, new tree decorations will debut this year.

"The Christmas tree will be receiving a new, bigger star and brighter lights," said Chaplain (Capt.) Richard Rojas, 436th Airlift Wing chaplain and project officer for the event.

Each year, the event is made possible with the help of many different squadrons on base that set up lights and transport bleachers.

"We're able to experience the spirit of the holiday season because of the contributions and efforts made by Team Dover Airmen to make this happen," said Chaplain Rojas. "Also, let us remember those who are not able to be with us during the holiday season because of the ultimate sacrifice they've given."
