3rd Infantry Division
Oct. 28, 2022 | 1:07
The 3rd Infantry Division is proud to announce the next class of nine inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame, including 107-year-old Silver Star recipient Harold Nelson. The Marne Hall of Fame honors Dogface Soldiers who served in the Division and had a lasting impact on the 3rd Infantry Division, our Army and nation.
Marne Hall of Fame nominees are U.S. military members (Officers, Warrant Officers, Noncommissioned Officers, and Soldiers) of 3rd ID who have brought great honor to the division through deed, sacrifice, or achievement. The 2022 inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame are:
• Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe
• Capt. Michael Daly
• Staff Sgt. Harold Nelson
• Master Sgt. Juan Negron
• Capt. Arlo Olson
• Sgt. 1st Class Agustin Ramos Calero
• Pvt. Demensio Rivera
• Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith
• Maj. Gen. Keith Ware
The addition of this new class of Marne Hall of Fame inductees preserves the division's legacy by paying respect to past heroes and promoting the unit’s remarkable history. The 2022 Marne Hall of Fame and Distinguished Members of the Division class will be formally inducted at the 3rd ID Soldier’s Ball on Dec. 2.
Sgt. 1st Class Agustin Ramos Calero enlisted in the Army in 1941 as an Infantryman. He was assigned to Puerto Rico’s 65th Infantry Regiment at Camp Las Casas in Santurce, Puerto Rico.
Upon the outbreak of World War II, Calero was reassigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and was sent to Europe with the 65th Infantry Regiment. He would later fight and serve with the 65th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in the Korean War.
In 1945, Ramos’s company was in the vicinity of Colmar, France, and engaged in combat against a squad of German soldiers in what is known as the Battle of Colmar Pocket. Calero attacked the squad, killing ten of them and capturing 21 shortly before being wounded himself.
Following these events, he was nicknamed "One-Man Army" by his comrades. For these actions he was awarded the Silver Star.
During the Korean War, he returned to the Borinqueneers and fought in Busan, Korea. In Korea, the Borinqueneers played a vital role pushing North.
They also protected the perimeter of Hungnam, as the 1st Marine Division arrived after a “fighting retreat” and helped with the evacuation of the area. They later traveled near Seoul to drive away the Chinese 149th Division.
Calero later retired from the Army in 1962.
