Dover AFB Recycles! Published March 17, 2015 By 436th Civil Engineer Squadron Dover Air Force Base, Del. -- In calendar year 2014, Dover Air Force Base recycled nearly 1,166 tons of materials. That's 2.33 million pounds of materials ranging from scrap metal, electronics, used oil, and tires to cardboard and office paper. These materials were all generated and processed through the Dover AFB Qualified Recycling Program (QRP). Some of the recycling products actually return money to the Dover QRP to be used to support the program. For 2014, recycled products returned $65,000 to Dover AFB. Those funds offset recycling costs. While recycling some products may not net large returns, the recycling effort does save money on disposal costs. The recycling center is located at Facility 650 near the North Gate and is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mrs. Valerie Swayze, member of the Civil Engineer Squadron and the Dover AFB QRP manager stresses before bringing any item to the center, first ensure it is not a serviceable item or government equipment. Those items must be managed through the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) system prior to submission. Electronics can also be recycled to include telephones, microwaves, toasters and radios along with personal computers (no government computers, please coordinate those with the Communications Squadron) and peripheral devices such as speakers, keyboards, cords and computer mice. Various recyclable waste streams are processed from the industrial processes throughout Dover AFB. The recycling center on base will accept personal / household recycling to include the electronics previously mentioned, used motor oil from vehicle maintenance (but it cannot contain antifreeze or brake fluid), washers, dryers and dishwashers. Excessive cardboard can also be brought to the cardboard roll-off. Other household recycling can be delivered as well, however, the recycling center requires recyclables to be separated where as our partners in privatized housing, Hunt Properties, offer their residents single stream curbside pickups weekly as of March 2015. "The housing residents have requested weekly pickups and we finally were able to make the necessary contractual changes to accommodate throughout the Eagle Heights privatized housing area," said new Hunt Property Manager, Sophia Reeves. "This is a win-win scenario for Hunt, the residents and the environment." The curbside pickups combined with metal recycling roll-off at the Housing Maintenance Facility and the ability for residences to bring excessive cardboard and other household recyclables to the base recycling center will continue to put Team Dover on the forefront of recycling in the State of Delaware.
