Dover AFB Honorary Commander Program Published Jan. 27, 2015 By Eric B. Kmiec 2013 & 2014 DAFB Honorary Commander DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- Shortly, I will join the ranks of the alumni of Honorary Commanders. It has been a privilege to serve for two years at Dover Air Force Base. While I couldn't attend as many events as I wanted because my work schedule is fairly intense, those events I did attend left a lifelong impression on the way I think about the military, military families, and how fortunate I am to live in this country. I was immediately struck by the professionalism and courtesy demonstrated by the men and women who serve on the base and, I am sure, Air Force bases all over the world. It is the true sense of humility and honor one feels at Dover AFB from those who serve. On this base, your word counts and we can count on what you say being true. The truth actually matters and respect and honor are not just words. I remember early on seeing a video depicting what happens when the call comes no matter where that call is from ...We will answer. These three words described to me what is in the heart and soul of all who serve at Dover. A few thoughts on how my experiences as an Honorary Commander have changed me forever: I walk a little taller when I think about being an American. I think a lot more about the men and women who allow me to walk in freedom. I drive a little slower by each base I pass and think about the people who work there and what they're doing for all of us. I look a little more respectfully at someone in a military uniform and wonder what they've seen that I don't have to see, and what they have done, that I don't have to do. I take a deeper breath when I see a military plane flying by and wonder where it's going while hoping it comes home safely. I stand a little straighter when I hear our National Anthem. And, I look at our flag differently, understanding better how much it means to me. I'm sure I speak for all of my colleagues ending our role as Honorary Commanders-- if you call... We will answer.
