DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. --

Col. Matthew Husemann took command of the 436th Airlift Wing during an assumption of command ceremony at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, June 4, 2021.

Maj. Gen. Thad Bibb, 18th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony.

Husemann returns to Dover AFB for the third time in his career, having served as a C-5M Super Galaxy evaluator aircraft commander with the 9th Airlift Squadron, an operations officer with the 436th Operations Support Squadron and as commander of both the 436th Force Support and 9th Airlift Squadrons.

“We have watched you from across the globe, execute with precision, poise, professionalism and integrity,” said Husemann. “Dover Airmen are known for making the impossible possible and you make it look easy.”

Husemann most recently served as vice commander of the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

“Matt is not new to Dover. It was here he showed how passionate he was about taking care of our mission, our Airmen and our families,” said Bibb. “He has led airlift missions around the globe delivering hope and defending our nation. Our job is to defend the nation against a multitude of threats. You are the heart and soul of a lethal and ready force that ensures America’s continued prosperity and defense. I am so proud of what this wing does every day.”

Chief Master Sgt. Tim Bayes, 436th AW command chief, passed the wing guidon to Bibb, who then passed it to Husemann, symbolizing the passing of authority to the new commander.

“We’ve had the opportunity to work with the community and work for the Dover Airman,” said Husemann. “But we will not pretend to know the specifics of your current mission. Chief Bayes and I are excited to work for you, learn from you and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves, rock the mission and have fun.”

After his remarks, Husemann received his first salute as commander from a formation of Team Dover Airmen, becoming Dover AFB’s 36th wing commander.
