With the major religious holidays months away, the summer is normally a time for the 436th Airlift Wing Chaplain's office to engage in their strategic planning and preparation for the coming year.

However, there is one large event that will have them overseeing more than 200 children, the Vacation Bible School being held June 22 - 26 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

"Most of our Religious Education programs take a hiatus during the summer," said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Tim Surgill, 436th Airlift Wing chaplain. "This is our big event for not only the base for the protestant and catholics, but it includes the entire community."

The Vacation Bible School will be held in the old Youth Center, building 3499, where the children will be grouped by age and grade. The event is open to children as young as 3 years old all the way up to children in the sixth grade.

"The day usually starts with a praise and worship type setting, then they'll learn some songs and be introduced to the bible verse of the day," said Tech. Sgt. Joanne Burgess, 436th Airlift Wing NCO in charge of outreach and unit ministries. "Being in the old Youth Center gives us room to divide up the classes so the volunteers will be able to work with the kids in smaller groups."

With more than 200 children, the Vacation Bible Study wouldn't be possible without the volunteers, according to the 436th Airlift Wing Chaplains office.

"We wouldn't be able to run this program without our volunteers," said Chaplain Sturgill. "We have a host of volunteers that do a myriad of services like setting up stages, craft, making snacks and teaching the classes."
